A group of three European climbers has reported a fight between themselves and a group of Sherpa guides on Mount Everest.

The climbers say they were attacked by Sherpas after a confrontation during their ascent.

In the Europeans’ version, set forth by Italian climber Simone Moro, he, a Swiss climber and a British climber were free ascending Everest when they came upon a Sherpa setting a fixed rope. Moro says the British climber, Jonathan Griffith, and the Swiss climber, Ueli Steck, stepped over the line, and the Sherpa above became angry, yelled at them and rappelled quickly, running into Steck. When the Europeans reached Camp 2, they were attacked by “some 100 Sherpas,” Moro’s statement says.

A statement from the trekking agency that organized the expedition says the climbers were told to wait while the fixed rope was being placed, but ignored the instructions.
