Canadian study: oil sands mining causes water pollution

Oil sands development in northern Alberta

A study funded by the Canadian government has confirmed that, in areas within 56 miles of a tar sands or oil sands operation, sediment in lakes contains higher levels of pollution.

Levels of pollution are two to 23 times higher than they were in the 1960s in lakes in Alberta, Canada, the researchers found.

The research discredits industry claims that tar sands areas have always been polluted, indicating the pollution is rising sharply in recent years.
