Obama again offers Medicare, Social Security cuts

In an attempt to ease the automatic sequester budget cuts, President Barack Obama has again offered to reduce spending on Social Security and Medicare, two “entitlement” programs often targeted by Republicans.

But Republicans in Congress — and Democrats, in fact — haven’t yet responded to the latest offer.

Saying “We have to make serious progress on long-term entitlement reform,” White House official Gene Sperling said the offer by Obama was an attempt to acknowledge Republican priorities.
