EU fines Microsoft over $700 million for antitrust violations

The European Union levied a $732 million fine against Microsoft for its failure to live by a 2009 antitrust commitment.

Microsoft had agreed to provide a "choice screen" for European consumers so they could choose the browser they wanted. The EU had ruled that Microsoft's packaging of Windows with the Internet Explorer browser only was an antitrust violation.

While Microsoft did provide the choice screen for about a year starting in March 2010, it eliminated the step in May 2011 when it released Windows 7 Service Pack 1. Failing to include the choice screen violated the agreement, the EU ruled.
