Republicans: bin Laden relative, terror suspect should not have U.S. trial

The U.S. government has decided to proceed with a trial against a suspected terrorist in U.S. federal court rather than in a military tribunal, despite opposition from Republicans.

President Barack Obama, who had previously pledged to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has decided to try Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, son-in-law of Osama bin Laden, in a civilian court for terrorism charges.

Republicans including Rep. Peter King, N.Y., and John Boehner, Ohio, released statements opposing the decision. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Abu Ghaith is an “enemy combatant” and should be given a military trial.
