U.S. support for gay marriage surges to highest mark ever

Fewer than 10 years ago, 55 percent of Americans opposed gay marriage — to the point that they told an ABC News/Washington Post poll it should be made illegal.

Now, a recent poll by the same organization found a higher percentage, 58, say gay marriage should be legalized.

It's one of the fastest shifts in overall public opinion for any social issue, as public positions on social issues often move slowly.

Among the groups that support gay marriage the most are people under 30, who support it at 81 percent, and Democrats, 72 percent of whom support the idea. Even among people who identified as Republican in the poll, 34 percent support legalizing same-sex marriage.
