Reid drops assault weapons ban; lacks support from Senate Democrats

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., has announced he will not pursue a revival of the ban on assault weapons, saying the White House-supported measure has fewer than 40 votes in the Senate.

Given the Senate is controlled 55-45 by Democrats, that indicates at least 15 Democrats have told Reid they don’t support bringing back the assault weapons ban, which was in place for much of the 1990s.

Other Democrat-backed bills on gun control appear to have more support and will move forward.
