Exxon hit with $236M court fine in NH pollution case

A New Hampshire jury has found gas company ExxonMobil liable for a $236 million cleanup bill in a groundwater pollution lawsuit.

The jury decided Exxon was responsible for cleaning gasoline additive MTBE from New Hampshire groundwater. The additive spreads more quickly than gasoline itself in water. Exxon offered the additive to New Hampshire counties, saying it would reduce smog, without determining that it was a defective product, the jury decided.

An Exxon lawyer suggested the presiding judge had incorrectly barred some evidence that would have helped Exxon make its case.
