“Corners are being cut,” an executive in the solar energy industry says, and it could be a black mark for the burgeoning industry.

A New York Times story looks into questions about the quality of solar panels, particularly claims that Chinese firms are manufacturing sub-standard panels that are failing.

The issue arises as solar energy booms — in the past 10 years, solar capacity has increased almost by a factor of almost 100. But since many panels, nearly half, were installed in the last year, faults and failures may not be visible for years.
