The recently revealed domestic spying program run by the National Security Agency was necessary to stop "over 50" terrorism plots, the director of the NSA said today.

In a hearing before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Army Gen. Keith Alexander said that the program, called Prism, stopped over 50 "potential terrorist events" since 9/11.

The program, approved by a secret court, allowed the NSA to monitor emails, phone calls and other communications in the U.S.
