Burrito bash

Boulder-based burrito chain Illegal Pete’s will open its sixth location in the popular Baker District of Denver on South Broadway.

The new Pete’s, at 270 S. Broadway, was formerly a car lot and has undergone extensive renovation, with design by Denver architect Melissa Friday, who designed Denver’s Snooze. The redesigned location will include a stage, a patio and a “play area” that includes games like bocce ball.

The restaurant will hold a grand opening over two days, July 13 and 14, at the new location between Cedar and Alameda on Broadway. July 13 will feature demonstrations by the Yellow Designs Stunt Team and APEX Movement, as well as tequila tastings from Dulce Vida Tequila and drafts of New Belgium beer, which are free with a donation to Wish For Wheels, a Greenwood Village nonprofit. Mile High Soul Club will play at 9 p.m. July 13. The following day, The Parlor Pickers will play at 7 p.m. The event is free; more information can be found at illegalpetes.com.

State employees begin fruit program

The state of Colorado has selected Lafayette’s Door to Door Organics as a partner in the state’s new “State of Colorado Employee Wellness Program,” intended to improve the health of the state’s employees.

Door to Door Organics will deliver “healthy snack boxes of farm-fresh organic fruit” to more than 100 Colorado state office locations in two waves this summer, reaching approximately 20,000 employees, a press release from Door to Door Organics says. The company will deliver 528 of the boxes over the course of the program, and each box includes 35-45 pieces of organic fruit.

State employees will also receive online health coaching, health challenges, wellness resources and prizes for participating, including a credit of up to $20 per month on their health insurance premiums.

The Employee Wellness Program is voluntary, and employees can sign up at www.colorado.gov/wellness.

Goat cheese from Sweden

Trillium, the American- and Scandinavian-inspired restaurant in Denver, will be holding the next entry in its Scandinavian Dinner Series on July 17, featuring the cuisine of Sweden. Authentic ingredients include gjetost mousse — gjetost, of course, being a Scandinavian goat cheese — sweet crab salad, pan-fried walleye and blueberry crème fraiche.

The four-course meal, served with rolling seating for multiple time slots, will feature amouse bouche, a palate cleanser and wine, cocktail and beer pairings for all of the food. The dinner costs $65 per seat. Upcoming dinner series installments include Denmark on Aug. 14 and Michigan on Oct. 16. More information is available at www.trilliumdenver.com.

Fresh fish and film

The Agora Event Center, a new venue in downtown Boulder, has announced a monthly culinary/entertainment combination series featuring local chefs and local artists.

The first installment, taking place at 7:30 p.m. on July 19, will be catered by Spruce Street’s Sushi Zanmai. It will feature a “Japanese inspired film,” as yet unnamed, at 8:15 p.m. inside the Agora, located at 1724 Broadway, between Arapahoe and Canyon.

The following event, on Aug. 18, will feature jazz singer Hazel Miller and a five-course dinner.

Crested Butte uncorked

A food festival focused on education will return to Crested Butte July 11-14, bringing with it dining events, food pairings and seminars on varieties of wine.

The weekend-long event includes tastings with master sommeliers and a screening of the wine-stained comedy Sideways. The wine seminars, with both visiting and local sommeliers and chefs, span topics from Wine 101 to Anything but Chardonnay: Unique Whites. There will also be a seminar on artisan cocktails.

Two dinners, the evenings of July 12 and 13, will be presented by multiple executive chefs from around Colorado, including Boulder’s Hosea Rosenberg of Blackbelly Catering on July 12, cooking alongside Jorel Pierce of Denver’s Euclid Hall and Kelly Whitaker of Denver’s Basta. The dinners are benefits for the food-focused James Beard Foundation.

The Crested Butte Wine and Food Festival culminates in a grand tasting event with more than 500 wines from 25 wineries and music from acoustic/string/bluegrass group the Matt Flinner Trio.
