Boulder Weekly took home a second place and a third place from a national contest conducted by the Association of Alternative Newsmedia (AAN) at the organization’s annual conference held in Miami last week.

The newspaper, which had previously won five AAN awards in its 20-year history, was notified that it was a top-three finalist in two categories in May. BW was competing against other weekly publications in the United States and Canada with circulations of less than 50,000.
The second-place award in the “Investigative Reporting” category went to the 10-part series “The Ghosts of Valmont Butte,” which ran from January to May of 2012.
BW won third place in the “Cover Design” category for three 2012 covers: “Who’s afraid?” on May 24, “Can your vote be traced?” on Sept. 6, and “The predator among us” on Oct. 18.
The awards were announced at a July 13 reception at the AAN Annual Convention. The winners were chosen from a field of more than 900 entries by judges at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University.
