City of Longmont Ballot Question 2C
Shall Municipal Judge Diana VanDeHey be retained for 2 years?
We’re always conscious of the need for fresh blood in the judicial system, which is hard to accomplish with Colorado’s retention voting system, which just invites yes votes. Then again, it’s a better setup than direct election of judges, which just invites the most ridiculous tough-on-crime posturing in a judge’s election year.
But there’s no point in bringing in fresh blood if the current judge is performing well. In the case of Judge Diana VanDeHey, we don’t see the kinds of glaring issues in her record — disputes about her decisions, high-profile cases overturned on appeal — that would indicate she should be removed.
