Numerous media outlets are reporting that civil engineer, self-proclaimed Bible scholar and Boulder native, Harold Camping has died at 92.

From an article in The Washington Post...

"Harold Camping, a Christian radio evangelist whose brimstone-ridden sermons stoked an international media frenzy in 2011 after his Armageddon prophecies coursed through the Internet and social media, died Dec. 15 at his home in Alameda, Calif. He was 92.

The death was confirmed by Family Radio, his Oakland, Calif.-based broadcasting company."

Camping is best known for the widespread multimillion dollar media and billboard campaign to convince people that the world would end first on May 21, 2011, and later on October 21 of the same year, a prediction he claimed to have divined from complex mathematical equations he applied to the Bible.

But less known is that he had been wrongly predicting the end of the world for decades, beginning with a series of books published in the early '90s. Camping continued to revise the date as his predictions failed to come true, until the most recent prediction in October of 2011. He suffered a stroke shortly afterwards and retreated from public life.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Shirley Vander Schuur, and countless punchlines that his predictions birthed.
