Weed and sushi, bourbon and bacon

MAUI WASABI

Pearl Street staple Hapa Sushi made the national press last week with a made-for-viral marketing campaign showcasing a menu full of sushi and pot pairings, such as Pakistani Kush with Pakalolo Shrimp or blue dream with katsu curry.

“Do you prefer a nice sit-down restaurant to the Taco Bell drive-through when the munchies hit? Then do we have the place for you.” wrote Gawker.

The menu was a joke, of course, which is good because while we here at BW experimented with pairing at a college party once, and the results of our dimebag-calamari brownies were a little too trippy for their own good.

B IS FOR BLOCKED ARTERIES

How’s your heartburn doing? Mellowing out? Not on our watch. Pack your Rolaids and get thee to the McNichols Civic Center Building in Denver on Saturday, Jan. 25 for the Bourbon and Bacon Fest and get that puppy roaring like Godzilla again in no time.

In case you’re wondering, the Bourbon & Bacon Fest is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: lots of barrel-aged corn liquor and pork candy. There will be samples from distilleries like Buffalo Trace, Larceny, Evan Williams and more, alongside tasty pig from Slotted Spoon, café|bar and Hideaway Kitchen Bar and more.

The event runs from 2:30 to 5 p.m. with early entry at 2 p.m. for VIPs. Tickets are available online at www.bourbonandbaconfest. com and cost $45 for normies, or $85 if you feel the need to avoid the rabble for the first 30 minutes.

Pro-tip: Make sure to get, like, super-high beforehand to maximize both the bourbon and the bacon, and to give Gawker something to write about that week.

LONGMONT IN THE CORNER POCKET

Hey kids, did you miss out on a college scholarship and find yourself in need of a way to pay for college? Don’t worry. Just pay your way through school by hustling pool at the newly opened Breakers in Longmont.

The 9,400-square-foot space is decked out with eight pool tables, six of them full-size, and has been fully done up with $300,000 worth of renovations. It now seats 270 and is rocking an old family recipe for pizza and calzones. Work is also underway to finish up a dance floor and several interior murals.

Breakers is at the southeast corner of Fourth and Main, and will be holding a grand opening par-tay on Friday, Jan. 17. If you go, you probably shouldn’t mention that whole bit about planning to pay for college by hustling pool. It’s sort of, well, “illegal.”

SHOUTING BAM FOR A GOOD CAUSE

A new celebrity chef series that will run through the end of February started up last week in Lafayette.

Every Friday of the series, the Indian Peaks Bar and Grill will bring in a hot new spatula-slinger to make the menu sing. And there are some serious names on the list, including Emeril “Bam- Bam” Lagasse, who will be making Asian braised beef short ribs on jasmine rice, and James Beard himself, who kicked the series off with pork chops in balsamic red wine reduction with all the side dishes fit to masticate.

This week’s guest is Giada De Laurentiis, who will be doing stuffed shells with arrabbiata sauce, arugula salad with lemon vinaigrette and herb Italian bread. Yummers.

Dinners are $20 per person, with $5 of each meal going to the Sister Carmen Community Center, a local food charity.

Reservations for the series must be made by noon the day before by calling 303-666- 9597.
