Turning green with beer

Beer lovers rarely need an excuse to toss back a few pints. But if you’re looking for one, Saint Patrick’s Day (Monday, March 17) generally qualifies. And there’s some decent happenings this week to toast the patron saint of green on green outfits and bad decision making.

First up is Conor O’Neill’s, which will be going bonkers all weekend long. They’ll have live Irish music and dancing on Saturday, March 15 from 5 p.m. on, then the world’s shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, March 16 at noon, followed by more music and dancing, including the McTeggart Irish Dancers, in a giant tent out back that will run pretty much up until closing time. If you prefer your Saint Paddy’s Day to be a classier affair without parades or giant tents, then try Sanitas Brewing, which will be hosting a special Saint Paddy’s Day dinner featuring grub from Chef Hosea Rosenburg of Blackbelly Catering, whom you might have heard of from winning a little television show called Top Chef.

Twisted Pine Brewing won’t exactly be having a Saint Patrick’s Day party, just its regularly scheduled Geeks Who Drink pub trivia event, but Geeks Who Drink are known for crafting their questions around themes and/or events.

So expect questions about all things Irish. But more than that, if there’s anything more in the spirit of Saint Patrick’s Day than belligerently shouting out the answers to questions that weren’t asked to you directly, we don’t know about it.

If you want to double up on your celebration, you’re in luck, since the calendar-challenged staff over at Boulder Brewing will be doing their Saint Patty’s Day shindig not on the day itself, but on Saturday, March 15.

“We’ll be featuring corned buffalo Reubens, potato and leek soup, Neopolitan Porter, Obovoid Stout, Irish step dancers at 3 p.m. and live music starting at 4 p.m.,” says Boulder Beer’s website. The festivities kick off at noon.

If for some reason you haven’t had enough after the epic epicness of SPD14, then head back to Boulder Beer on Tuesday, March 18 for the tapping of a special limited edition brew:

Pachuca Sunrise, “a dry-hopped, peach golden ale, aged in a first-use port wine barrel.”

And finally, if all of that sounds far away and new-fangled, then stick to Pearl and hit up Old Chicago, which is currently pouring a special batch of Drowning Shamrock Irish Red Ale, a red IPA brewed by Boulder Beer exclusively for Old Chicago. But here’s the thing, like Saint Patrick drove the snakes from Ireland, so too will he drive the Drowning Shamrock from Old Chicago. The last day you can get that beer is Monday, March 17.
