CHINESE PUZZLE

A 40-year-old father’s life is complicated when the mother of his two children moves to New York. Since he can’t bear them growing up far away from him, he decides to move there as well, and also fathers a child for his lesbian friends, marries a Chinese woman for a green card and falls back in love with an old flame. Starring Romain Duris and Audrey Tautou. At Boedecker. — Boedecker Theater

The Black Pirate (1926)

Silent film starring Douglas Fairbanks and featuring live musical accompaniment by the Silent Cinema Trio. A nobleman Michel (Douglas Fairbanks) vows vengeance on the cutthroats responsible for his father’s death. Becoming the black pirate, he joins their scurvy crew and quickly becomes their leader. But his plans for revenge become more complicated when he meets his first captive — a beautiful Spanish princess. Like a Robert Louis Stevenson adventure come to life, this high seas epic ripples with customary intrigue and a rapid succession of brilliantly inventive stunts. Mastered from a 35mm negative, this edition carefully recreates the authentic palette of two-strip Technicolor (comprised of varying blends of green and orange) so that modern viewers can savor the photography which the New York Times praised as “mindful of the paintings of the old masters.” At Chautauqua Auditorium. — Chautauqua
