McGuckin's employee stabbed during attempted robbery

By Katherine Creel

A McGuckin’s loss-prevention employee was stabbed the evening of Jan. 28, according to a Boulder Police report.

According to the report, the employee noticed suspect Daniel Wesley Brewer, 44, attempting to leave the store with unpaid merchandise. When the employee confronted him, Brewer allegedly pepper-sprayed him and cut him at least two times with a knife, the report said.

According to the report from the police department, the suspect then ran from the area. The employee and a co-worker began chasing him, while giving 911 operators information about their route, and police apprehended the suspect on 28th Street, the report said.

The employee was taken to the hospital to be treated for at least two knife wounds. Police said Brewer also had an injury consistent with a knife and was taken to the hospital for treatment. It appears the injury occurred sometime between the initial struggle and Brewer being taken into custody, possibly while he was complying with the officer’s order to get down on the ground. Evidence officers recovered from Brewer included a pocketknife and a can of mace, the report said.

Brewer was booked into the Boulder County Jail on charges of aggravated  robbery, first-degree assault and theft under $500. The victim’s injuries are not expected to be life-threatening.
