TASTE ART

The Dairy Center for the Arts is hosting a four-day food festival that celebrates what many of us food lovers know: food is art.

From Thursday, June 18 to Sunday, June 21, the Dairy is hosting several events that stimulate minds and appetites.

Festivities begin on Thursday with the “Art of Plating” demonstration by Chef Bob Sampson at 5 p.m. at the East Theatre. The demonstration will highlight all the ways plating can elevate food and present unique ideas to use at home. The event is followed by hors d’oeuvres provided by The Kitchen, Leaf Vegetarian Restaurant and Cantina Laredo, and wine will be provided by Bonterra Wine. Live harp music will also happen. Tickets are $35 for this event.

On Friday, the Artful Chef competition kicks off at the Culinary Center at the Sterling Rice Group in downtown Boulder at 6:30 p.m. This event features three chefs who are each paired with a local artist. The duos then need to create a dish and table spread that is judged on its taste and beauty. Attendance to this event includes free cocktails and small plates.

Then on Saturday at 4 p.m., the A Taste of Art gallery opens at the Dairy. The show features exhibitions in various food-related media, from photos to cakes. The exhibit will feature “exhibits of art related to food,” as well as pastries prepared by students at the Escoffier School of Culinary Arts. There will also be artisan table linens and ceramics on sale.

STAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER

If you feel like hitting the road this weekend, check out the 118th Strawberry Days festival, which will be held in Glenwood Springs June 19-21. THe event will feature a beer garden with dozens of local brews on tap, food vendors from across the state and much more grub.

But of course the festival includes much grander festivities, including a rotating lineup of musicians, an arts and crafts show, carnival rides, games and a parade.

There’s also a Miss Strawberry Days pageant that will reward the winner not only with the prestigious fruit crown but with a scholarship.

And there will be a tremendous amount of strawberries. It’d be kind of silly if there weren’t. The 100-year tradition of handing out free strawberries and ice cream after the parade on Saturday will be renewed yet again this year.
