Around the world in $50 (a day)

How to Travel the World on $50 a Day — Matt Kepnes. 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, Boulder Book Store, 1107 Pearl St., Boulder, 303-447-2074.

After visiting more than 75 countries, Matthew Kepnes has picked up a few tricks of the trade. And now Kepnes is sharing his knowhow in his book How to Travel the World on $50 a Day.

In 2003, Kepnes fell in love with travel after a trip to Costa Rica. He then soon after decided to leave his job and take a year off to explore the world.

“I like the freedom travel gives,” Kepnes says. “You can do what you want when you want. I like the newness of everything. It’s always interesting and different. It keeps life exciting.”

Kepnes has been travelling extensively ever since — saying he likes to live large and travel cheap. Always a frugal person, Kepnes says traveling cheaply isn’t always about saving money but also about avoiding tourist traps for a more genuine experience.

“It’s about trying to find value when you travel — finding the offbeaten path and getting off the commercialized travel route, where all the tourists are,” he says. “It’s about being able to find deals and knowing where to look so you get more of the local environment.”
