Burmese art exhibit at Naropa

Nederland’s Mountain Forum for Peace will present “Children of the Storm,” an exhibition of crayon artwork by Burmese children orphaned by Cyclone Nargis, from 4 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 26, at Naropa University’s Lincoln Hall, at 2130 Arapahoe Ave. in Boulder.

The exhibition will raise funds to support 80 children orphaned by the May 2008 cyclone that claimed an estimated 180,000 lives in Burma. The military government of Burma provided no meaningful assistance to cyclone victims. The project, like most assistance to the victims, is driven by a grassroots effort of Burmese activists inside Burma. The volunteers placed these children in homes of relatives and villagers where they can continue their lives and education.
The exhibition was prepared by Nederland-area artists Virginia Unseld and Gail Watson.

Refreshments will be served.

New name for RSVP

On Feb. 14, RSVP of Boulder County took on a new name — CareConnect — to more accurately reflect its direct services for seniors and adults with disabilities.

Since 1972, the name RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) has been associated with a program that connects older adults with volunteer opportunities in their communities. While the Boulder branch of RSVP continues to provide this volunteer program for seniors, it also provides a number of safety-net services to older adults and adults with disabilities.

The organization provides a free grocery-shopping and delivery service, rides to medical appointments, and a fix-it program for minor repairs. The organization also serves as a resource to Seniors by providing Senior Safety Seminars, airs a television show called 50Up!, and has an emergency health information program called ‘File of Life.’

Look great and donate

The HospiceCare and Share Thrift Shop is planning a week-long bridal event called Look Great and Donate with lots of sweetheart deals running through Feb. 22. A dedicated bridal shop will be open in the Thrift Shop, located at 5290 Arapahoe Avenue, in Boulder, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. each day. Designer, vintage and contemporary wedding gowns will highlight the week-long sale, along with special occasion dresses and accessories such as veils, shoes and jewelry. No gown will be priced over $99 and some will be available on Craigslist during the time of the promotion.

Deadline looms for art proposals

Artists have until 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22 to submit their qualifications for public art to be displayed at the Boulder Transit Village site, located near 30th and Pearl streets. The selected artist or team of artists will provide a design for functional and integrated art, and then will create and install the project. The Regional Transportation District has committed $70,000 to $100,000 toward art. A request for submissions is posted at www.artsresource.org/. Erie board weighs pot moratorium

The Erie Board of Trustees is considering an ordinance that would extend the existing temporary moratorium on applications for occupation licenses, permits and building permits for businesses selling medical marijuana. Town officials are considering extending the moratorium to provide more time to investigate its regulatory authority over such businesses. The board reviewed the proposed ordinance on Feb. 9 and will consider the ordinance on second reading on Feb. 23.

Alpaca extravaganza

Now is your chance to pet an alpaca. Head to the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont for a weekend of alpaca festivities. The event will be held Feb. 27 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees will have a chance to speak with regional alpaca farmers, spend hands-on time with the alpacas themselves and purchase handmade alpaca fiber products.
