Tidbites | Smoke, heat can spoil food

Smoke, heat can spoil food

Boulder County health officials are warning that food exposed to fire, even indirectly, can be dangerous. Heat from the flames can activate bacteria in canned food, causing spoilage, and smoke fumes can contaminate food in permeable packages. Also, the chemicals used to fight fires contain toxic materials that can contaminate food. Power outages can also lead to food spoilage. When in doubt, throw it out, health officials say.

If you have spoiled food caused by the fire, you can dispose of it at the Western Disposal Transfer Station, located at 5880 Butte Mill Rd. and open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 303-441-1457.

Halfway to St. Patty’s

On Friday, Sept. 17, to mark the halfway point to St. Patrick’s Day, the Baker St. Pub in Boulder, located at 1729 28th Street, will offer a complimentary basket of fish and chips from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The only catch is you have to be wearing green. For more information, call 720-974-9490.

Salt’s birthday dinner

Salt Bistro opened in Boulder one year ago, and to honor that event, as well as to thank the community for its support, it is offering a three-course dinner showcasing both organic and local produce, for $31 a person through Sept. 23. The first course is a choice of organic corn chowder with Long Family Farm bacon, roasted beet salad or basil pesto flatbread. For the second choice, guests can choose a selection of summer vegetables, Colorado striped bass or Gold Canyon nevernever hanger steak. The two dessert choices are dark chocolate caramel salt tart or an organic Colorado peach cobbler. A portion of the proceeds will go to benefit The School Food Project. Salt is located at 1047 Pearl St. For more information, call 303-444-7258.

Boulder’s own beer ‘fest’

Big, sour, hoppy, crazy, complex, interesting, odd and world-class, beers of all varieties will be at the Avery Tap Room for the week of the Great American Beer Festival. Avery will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day through Sunday, Sept. 19, with special tappings every day at noon. For a list of which beers will be tapped each day, visit www. averybrewing.com.

As always, 21 other Avery beers will also be on tap, including many brews only available at the Tap Room. Avery Brewing Company is located at 5757 Arapahoe Ave. For more information, call 303-440- 4324.

Six-packs for everyone

Anheuser-Busch is sending more than 51,000 cans of drinking water to Boulder to help residents affected by the Fourmile Canyon fire. The water arrived in Denver on Monday, and the American Red Cross is working with the National Donations Network System to ship donations to those who need them. A central warehousing operation is being set up in Louisville.

Anheuser-Busch donated more than 5 million cans of drinking water to victims of natural disasters in 2008 and 2009.
