Bread-baking battle

Food Fight, a Boulder-based food project, has announced the inaugural Boulder Baking Competition, to be held in early January.

The Boulder Baking Competition encourages bakers, food enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys a good time in the kitchen to share their favorite sweet bread recipe with the community.

“The bake-off will provide great exposure of Boulder’s love for food, our local and organic ingredients — not to mention our amazing local food companies,” says Alexandra Hanifin, founder of Boulder Baking.

Alternative baking methods such as gluten-free, vegan, organic and using local ingredients are encouraged as a way to personalize the breads and give the competition a Boulder touch.

Contestants will be supplied with a baking package and a score sheet listing the categories on which they will be judged. Contestants will bake at home and bring the final bread, in the compostable baking mold supplied, and a list of ingredients used, to the judges on Jan. 15.

Winners, who will receive cash prizes of $500, $200 and $100, will be announced at an awards ceremony at Vermilion Design Agency in Boulder on Jan. 16. The online registration deadline is Jan. 7, and proceeds from the $15 entry fee will be donated to the School Food Project Fund and The Allergy Kids Foundation.

Scouting out cookies

The holidays are almost over, and your new year’s resolutions are about to kick in, but there’s still one more reason to celebrate: On Jan. 7, Girl Scout Cookies go on sale across the state.

Do-Si-Dos, Samoas, Tagalongs and all the rest will be available until March 13, so don’t wait. Any extra boxes (if such a thing even exists) can be frozen for later.

Girl Scout Cookies cost $3.50 per box, and all money raised supports girls in Girl Scouts of Colorado, with a portion of the money going directly to the scouts themselves.
