CU business school provides tax help for low-income residents

The Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado Boulder will be offering free tax help to low-income individuals for the second year in a row as part of its partnership with the Piton Foundation and other colleges throughout Colorado.

According to the Leeds School of Business website, trained and certified student volunteers will be working with Tax Help Colorado, a program sponsored by the Piton Foundation, to help taxpayers with a household income of less than $49,000.

Student volunteers last year helped 369 taxpayers, who received a sum of $665,332 in refunds, the site said.

The program will run Jan. 29 through April 9 on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 5 to 8 p.m., with the exception of March 20, March 23 and March 26, when it will be closed for spring break. Tax assistance will take place in Koelbel Room 375 on campus.

Study: Warming North Atlantic water linked to Arctic global warming

An international study involving the University of Colorado Boulder says that warming water in the North Atlantic Ocean is most likely related to global warming in the Arctic.

The study shows that water from the Fram Strait, running between Greenland and a northern archipelago of Norway, has warmed about 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit in the past 100 years. The water is roughly 2.5 degrees warmer than it was during the Medieval Warm Period, which impacted the climate in Northern Europe and northern North America.

The study’s team speculates that rapid warming in the Arctic and a decrease in Arctic sea ice have enhanced the North Atlantic heat transfer. The National Snow and Ice Data Center at CU-Boulder has estimated that the total loss of Arctic sea ice from 1979 to 2009 is an area greater than the state of Alaska.

The Jan. 28 issue of Science will feature a paper on the study.
