Legislative forum
Several local legislators will attend a forum on Feb. 12 from 10 a.m. to noon on the CU-Boulder campus in the new Visual Arts Building, Room 1B-99.

Reps. Claire Levy, D-Boulder, Dickey Lee Hullinghorst, D-Longmont, and Deb Gardner, D-Longmont, will talk about their plans for the session and have a conversation about the new political landscape at the Capitol. Sen. Rollie Heath, D-Boulder, will attend as well.

The group plans to hold the meetings regularly on the second Saturday of each month through May.

Land swap bill proposed by Udall

On Feb. 3, Mark Udall introduced the Sugar Loaf Fire Station Land Exchange Act of 2011 to facilitate a land swap between the Sugar Loaf Fire District and the U.S. Forest Service. The bill is co-sponsored by Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet and contains similar language to legislation Udall introduced in 2009.

Under the bill, the fire district would obtain 5.08 acres of land under two of its three fire stations in exchange for 5.17 acres in unincorporated Boulder County. The Boulder County land would become part of the Arapahoe-Roosevelt National Forest and be managed accordingly by the Forest Service.

Udall says this would allow the fire district to secure its sites and maintain its wildfire-fighting services to the Sugar Loaf community, while ensuring the Forest Service gets a fair amount of land in return.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day on March 8, BeadforLife is encouraging women everywhere to host BeadParties, the proceeds of which will go to providing 150 Ugandan women with the opportunity to earn a steady income for one year.

Party hosts will receive a Party Pack that includes shea butter products and hundreds of pieces of bead jewelry.

BeadforLife’s goal is to hold at least 500 BeadParties by March 31.

Heart disease lecture on tap

According to the Lafayette Recreation Department, only 57 percent of females are aware that heart disease is the leading cause of death among women.

In an effort to raise awareness about the risks of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and the development of heart disease, the Recreation Department is holding free educational lectures.

The first of the lectures took place earlier this week, and the next will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at the Bob L. Burger Recreation Center.

Admission to the event is free, and participants can call ahead to reserve a seat at 303-665-0469.
