AN INDIAN CULINARY ADVENTURE

Local food enthusiasts are invited to join a cooking journey through India during a two-day workshop June 16-17 at the Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts in Boulder. A panel of experts on Indian cuisine will lead participants in a wide-ranging feast of insights that includes an interactive cooking demonstration.

Executive Chef Suvir Saran, an author and celebrity chef who has appeared on Bravo TV’s Top Chef Masters, will showcase his knowledge of Northern Indian cuisine, while food writer and historian Ammini Ramachandran will turn audiences on to Southern Indian vegetarian cooking. Rounding out the panel is Colorado-based Manisha Pandit, a food blogger with a focus on cuisine from India’s Western coast, and underground supper club enthusiast Asha Gomez.

Using as much locally sourced produce as possible, the cooking demo will feature eight different recipes each day. On Saturday, participants will focus on vegetarian dishes, while Sunday introduces meat and seafood onto the menu.

ARTISANS’ TWISTED LOVE OF CRAFT

Continuing its celebration of Colorado’s artistic creativity, Twisted Pine Brewing Company has introduced another craft beer creation for the month of June.

Black Swan Saison, the newest entry in Twisted Pine’s Artisan Ale Project, is a darker and stronger take on traditional straw-colored beers of the Saison variety. Crafted with German malts and natural brown sugars, the brewery describes the flavor of the brew as “bold and rich, yet smooth.”

More than just a way of introducing new beers, the Artisan Ale Project has paired local artists with each new entry to brew up interest in local creative talents. For Black Swan, Boulder artist Phil Lewis designed a piece of art featured on the label, and is displaying his artwork this month at the Twisted Pine Ale House. STOP WINING ABOUT NO LOCAL CHOICES

Colorado-sourced wine from the Western Slope will be on hand Saturday, June 16, during a tasting event at Boulder Wine Merchant.

The free event from 3 to 5 p.m. brings the Thompson family and Boulder Creek Winery to town to sample their concoctions. Since 2003, Jackie Thompson, her husband Mike and son Will have plied the winemaking trade in Colorado. Now, the labor of their fruits is paying off, as customers will be able to sample the wares of Boulder Creek, including their heralded Viognier and Cabernet Franc selections.

Boulder Wine Merchant is located at 2690 Broadway. Call 303- 443-6761 for information.

FEEL LESS GUILTY INDULGING YOUR SWEET TOOTH

Boulder artisan candy maker JJ’s Sweets is expanding its product line and introducing new packaging on its dairy-free caramels this summer, attempting to capitalize on the specialty food craze that pines for old-school recipes made with new-millennium dietary knowledge.

As the popularity of its coconut milk caramels has grown, JJ’s Sweets has recommitted its focus to its handmade, non-GMO Cocomels candy line.

Using coconut oil rather than dairy fat makes for a healthier caramel, and by using sustainably sourced, premium ingredients, along with organic sweeteners, Cocomels are promoted as vegan, gluten-free, corn-free and soy-free. New flavors being rolled out include Sea Salt, Vanilla and a Java flavor made with organic espresso beans.
