12 dead, 58 injured in Aurora movie theater shooting

By Boulder Weekly Staff

At a midnight showing of the film The Dark Knight Rises, 12 people were killed and 58 were injured after a lone gunman began firing into a packed Century 16 theater in Aurora.

According to various reports, suspect James Holmes, 24, allegedly entered theater No. 9 through an emergency exit at the front of the theater around 12:30 a.m. Friday morning, threw a canister of smoke or tear gas and began firing into the crowd. Police say Holmes was wearing a gas mask and full black assault gear with a ballistic helmet, throat, leg and groin protection, as well as tactical gloves. He was armed with an AR-15 assault rifle, a Remmington 12-gauge shotgun and a .40 caliber glock handgun. Holmes is now in police custody and police are confident he acted alone.

A statement released by the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus confirms that suspect, James Holmes, was in the process of withdrawing from the school's graduate program in neurosciences. The school included Holmes' photo with the release.
