Cutting down on wasteful eating

Americans toss nearly half of their food

About 40 percent of the food that hits American plates doesn't go down American throats. Instead, it enters American landfills, or, at best, it's turned to compost.

But waste to that degree is starting to clash with other issues — high food prices, global starvation, and drought, in particular. For the average family, environmental news site Grist says, that waste adds up to around $2,000 annually for a single family.
