In Ohio, fracking inches forward

Forest service chooses not to rewrite management plan

In central Ohio, the Wayne National Forest is becoming yet another staging ground for a fight over fracking, as Wayne Forest Supervisor Anne Carey decided not to rewrite the plan for the management of the forest and prevent hydraulic fracturing in the area.

Carey attended anti-fracking protests in the Athens, Ohio area before making the decision. She said fracking isn’t enough of a concern to overhaul the six-year-old management plan for the forest.

Carey’s decision can only be appealed by federal lawsuit. Anti-fracking activists said they would pursue that route to prevent the gas drilling technique from being employed in Wayne National Forest.
