Historian: Scrap of scripture refers to Jesus…and his wife

A Coptic monastery

A fourth-century scrap of papyrus makes reference to a wife of Jesus Christ, a concept unheard-of in Christianity that could, if authenticated, have massive effects on the faith.

Harvard historian Karen L. King says she was given the document by a donor who has asked to remain anonymous. A “small circle of experts” in ancient texts and Coptic linguistics have confirmed that the Egyptian text is most likely not a forgery.

The text quotes Jesus saying, “My wife…” after which the page, no larger than a business card, is cut off. in a line below, the text reads, “she will be able to be my disciple.”
