Convicted Pussy Riot members receive delay in appeal

The three members of Pussy Riot who were convicted in August of "hooliganism" received a delay in their appeal after one of the members fired her lawyers.

Yekaterina Samutsevich fired her attorneys because they didn't see her case the same way she did, she told the court, offering no further details. She has found new representation, she said. The judge delayed the appeals process until Oct. 10.

The prosecutor in the case said the move was a delay tactic, although why convicted prisoners in jail would delay their appeal wasn't clear.

The three women were convicted in August of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred after an impromptu concert in a Russian Orthodox church. The convictions have been criticized as politically motivated, as the band has been a visible, outspoken critic against Russian President Vladimir Putin.
