Rothko defaced at London's Tate Modern

Twitter user Tim Wright, @WrightTG
The defaced painting

The 1958 Mark Rothko painting "Black on Maroon" was defaced by a visitor to the Tate Modern Museum in London Sunday.

The visitor, identified by Reuters as Vladimir Umanets, pulled out a marker pen or paintbrush and wrote "VLADIMIR UMANETS '12, A POTENTIAL PIECE OF YELLOWISM" in the corner of the Rothko painting. "Yellowism" is a self-identified "not art or anti-art" movement, according to its website. Vladimir Umanets is identified as one of the movement's founders on the site.

A London art restorer said the painting likely could be repaired.
