Colorado's DJ Vajra wins the USA DMC title

Posted By: David Accomazzo

Colorado's Chris Karns, aka DJ Vajra, won the prestigious USA DMC US Finals on Saturday, and he'll represent the United States at the DMC World Championships on Oct. 6 and Oct. 7 in London.

The DMC championships pit turntablist DJs from across the world against one another in competition. Karns, who spins at Round Mindnight on Pearl Street almost every Friday night, has made the US finals several times before, but this is his first time winning it all at the national level.

DJ Rob Swift, who judged the competition, said that Karns succeeded in connecting with the audience, which pushed him over the top.

"You can just tell he couldn’t wait to entertain us and that beyond anything, he may have done technically made the strongest impression on me.

"You can be the fastest scratcher, the funkiest beat juggler or the flashiest body trick DJ, at the end of the day connecting with your audience and showing them you’re enjoying every moment of being on stage entertaining everyone trumps all. Vajra reinforced that today!"

Karns humbly announced the victory by tweeting, "I won the dmc usa finals!!!"

He later told Boulder Weekly via email that "staying positive, being persistent, working hard, and being original are the combination of things that helped me win this year."

Colorado's Cysko Rokwel tied for fifth place.
