Hope you got some rest after last week's hiatus, because this week Flatiron Rock is back with Boulder band Black Acid Devil.
The band is the creative spawn of guitarist/vocalist Arjun Narayan, who formed the band in winter 2009 shortly after transferring to the University of Colorado Boulder from the University of Washington. He recruited bassist Taylor Iversen, and the band has gone through a Spinal Tap-esque slew of drummers, with Michael Amster currently holding down the battery. Recently, Black Sleep of Kali guitarist Patrick Alberts joined as rhythm guitarist.
In interest of full disclosure, Narayan is a busy guy — he plays drums in my band, Monocle Stache. With that out of the way, let me describe the music. Black Acid Devil's sound can be hard to categorize. It's a darkness-infused blend of pentatonic stoner metal and doom metal. The influence of Black Sabbath and Danzig (duh) are most apparent, but you can also hear the songwriting tricks of Queens of the Stone Age and the fuzzed-out, bass-heavy guitar sounds of The Melvins. It's music for the disaffected music fans who are sick of the pretension and hive mentality of the indie rock scene/college hipster scene, as evident in the angry, defensive lyrics in the song, "You Don't Know Shit About Dopesmoke," from their debut release Mountains of Madness. The rest of the album continues as such, with the surprisingly hard-hitting "Death by Cop" contrasting the demon-filled hellscapes of songs like "Doom Scrolls of Taran'iish." Check out the pulverizing track "Firebird" below.
