SLIDESHOW: Black Keys at the 1stBank Center, May 1

Posted By: David Accomazzo

Before I left for the Black Keys concert last night, I checked the setlist from the band's show at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla. Seemed pretty solid, mostly stuff from their newest album and the one before it. OK, I knew what I was in for. I did not think to check the list from the previous night at the 1stBank Center. If I had, I would have noticed that the setlist was exactly the same as the Tulsa show. And as far as I can tell, they played the same songs in the same order last night. That's right, they played the exact same setlist at the exact same venue two nights in a row.

How would you feel if you were a diehard Black Keys fan who bought tickets to both nights? This is a band that has released seven albums. There are more than enough songs for two nights of material. To my knowledge, there was no warning that there would be two nights of the same music. It's not quite a "fuck you" to everyone who spent more than $100 on tickets for both nights, but it seems pretty close.

To the band's credit, they played their songs very well. Even though the bare-bones guitar-drums duo is largely a thing of the past (the band played most of the night with another guitarist and a bassist), drummer Patrick Carney and guitarist Dan Auerbach looked like they were working just as hard with a full band as they would by themselves. The band galloped out of the gates with "Howlin' for You," from 2010's Brothers and then transitioned into "Next Girl," also from Brothers. About six or seven songs in, the band dismissed the two stringers and went into old-school duo mode. "Thickfreakness," "Girl Is On My Mind," "Your Touch" and others sounded incredible with just Carney and Auerbach playing. Don't take it from me though — take it from the (I presume) high school Latin Club president standing next to me, who exclaimed to her friend, "By the beard of Zeus are they good live!"

The band charged through their set, barely pausing to talk to the crowd or take even the slightest break between songs. It's a testament to their performance and to the quality of their songs that the concert felt like it was over in the blink of an eye. During the encore, a meteoric disco ball lowered over the stage, and when the band came back and played the first notes of "Everlasting Light," the techs hit the ball with multi-colored spotlights, showering the 1stBank Center in an impressive cascade of light. The band then played "She's Long Gone" and ended with "I Got Mine."

I didn't take impeccable notes on the set list, but here's the ones I found over at Looks pretty accurate to me.

2. Next Girl

This is incorrect.  They opened the show with Gold On The Ceiling.  Clearly you weren't paying much attention, and the validity of your entire article suffers as a result.  I do however agree with you on the lameness of playing the same show night after night.  Surely even the band gets tired of this?

Kyle is WRONG. I was there on the second night and they opened up with Howlin for you...

Kyle -- Nope. Howlin' for You was certainly the first song.
