Shakespeare Fest fixture honored by fellow patrons — in England

Posted By: Sebastian Murdock

Colorado Shakespeare Festival (CSF) supporter, K Watkins, visited Shakespeare’s Globe theater in London in 2010, she says one thing was missing: her friend and mentor, Chuck Wilcox.

“I was utterly awed and thrilled when I visited the Globe, but my first reaction was that the only thing missing was Chuck because he had been playing [Shakespeare] for so many years,” Watkins says.

Wilcox, who has been an integral part of CSF since 1971 and plays William Shakespeare on The Green before performances, was surprised Sunday evening with the news that his signature would be going on the wall of the recreation of Shakespeare’s famous Globe Theatre in London.

Theater patrons and friends of Wilcox helped raise $500 to make the gift possible.

“Over 30 people have helped donate,” Watkins says.

The gift, presented by CSF Producing Artistic Director Philip Sneed, made Wilcox overcome with emotion.

“Thank you, thank you so much” was all Wilcox could say at the news.

Watkins says that with the outpouring of support for Wilcox, they’re halfway to having enough money to purchase plane tickets for Wilcox to go see the Globe and his signature in person.

“I’ll be delighted to go,” Wilcox says, before enthusiastically diving back into character.
