Pear Crisp with Ginger Whipped Cream




Ah, the crisp fall air is taking me away to apple-cinnamon candle land, where children frolic in the leaves and pumpkin lattes rule the menus.

Oh wait, just woke up, and it’s still 80 degrees out.

This week I’m doing the fall dance (you know, instead of the rain dance) and I am sure 60s and 70s will grace our presence.

Just in case my dance “falls” short, I have a back-up plan: Pear Crisp with Ginger Whipped Cream. If that dessert doesn’t take you right to your autumn happy place, then you are not welcome in my apple-cinnamon candle land. I will, however still share this yummy dessert, and hope it jumps into your recipe box and makes itself at home.


Pears are not only delicious but good for you, too, full of vitamin C and an excellent source of dietary fiber. They are good to eat right out of your hand, or used in sweet and savory dishes. I love to slice up a pear and drop in a little Ketel One Vodka and cinnamon. Refreshing and holiday-ensured, all at the same time. How you like my special land now?

This dessert is great warm, but works at room temperature as well. The ginger whipped cream adds a kick of spicy and sweet, pairing perfectly with the crisp oatmeal top. Not that there will be any left by morning, but I also enjoy this with my coffee in the morning. Nothing says the holidays are here better than dessert for breakfast!

No one wants to see my fall dance, I’m sure, so allow me to suggest sipping a pumpkin latte, lighting your favorite autumn candle and making this delicious pear crisp. Fall will come calling, and all will be well.

Pear Crisp with Ginger Whipped Cream

4-5 pears cored and sliced (about ¼-inch slice) juice of

1/2 of one orange zest of

1/2 of one orange

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 tsp. ginger

1 tsp. allspice

1/2 cup flour

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup old-fashioned oats

6 tbsp. butter (cut into pieces)

1 tsp. cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 9-by-9-inch baking pan. Toss pears, orange juice, orange zest, sugar, cinnamon, ginger and allspice in medium bowl. Pour into prepared baking pan.


In small bowl, combine flour, brown sugar and oats. Cut in butter and mix until resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over pears. Top with tsp. cinnamon.

Bake for 40-45 minutes until top is golden brown and pears are bubbling. Take out and let cool. Can serve warm or at room temperature. Scoop into serving bowls and top with ginger whipped cream. Enjoy!

Ginger Whipped Cream

1 cup whipped cream

1 tsp. vanilla

2 tbsp. powdered sugar

1/2 tsp. ground ginger crystallized ginger for garnish (optional)
