Country star Brad Paisley has made waves with a recent song that talks directly about issues of race and understanding. But, Ta-Nehisi Coates of The Atlantic writes, the song probably says a little more than Paisley realizes.
The song, “Accidental Racist,” is a duet with rapper LL Cool J in which Paisley and LL try to reach an understanding about how a Southern man who likes wearing the Confederate Flag to honor Lynyrd Skynyrd and a black New Yorker can get along.
But even in the choice of LL Cool J, a rapper never known for making any statements about race, Paisley has indicated that all black men are generally the same and LL can speak for all of them.
