San Francisco’s Doe Eye (Maryam Qudus) is the master of a tricky blend: dissonant noise, and smooth pop songcraft. The tunes on her new album Television are apocalyptic dream pop with washes of distorted guitars, electronic noise and jagged, echoed drum patterns beneath smooth and luscious vocals crooning melodies native to the deepest melancholy.

Her first EP was recorded as a demo for her professors at the Berklee College of Music, but after it got sent to a Boston radio station, Doe Eye was quickly hailed as one of the top unsigned acts everywhere from the Alternative Press to Billboard.

That recognition allowed Television, Doe Eye’s second release, to be produced by John Vanderslice, who has worked with Spoon, The Mountain Goats and Nada Surf. Vanderslice’s work is just as solid with Doe Eye, evoking a darkly-themed atmosphere that feels approachable and familiar, a stunning combination.
