Why ‘Won’t Back Down’ should go back to school

The 34th richest person in the country, a conservative Christian and oil man, went and made a movie. Spoiler alert: It pushes conservative values and themes at the expense of depicting anything realistic.

Won’t Back Down is a super-uplifting tale of two mothers who have literally boundless energy to take on the terrible, awful, no-good, very bad teacher’s union that’s ruining their kids school. These two — and particularly Maggie Gyllenhaal as Jamie — find time and energy for activism after their two jobs and never worry about money.

Oh, and the school they save, that’s failing because of poor teaching and union bureaucracy? Its students are an improbable rainbow of colors and ethnicities, even though the actual failing schools in Pittsburgh, Pa. are almost all black.
