DON’T EAT THE BROWN BROWNIES

In something of a study from “the duh institute,” The Denver Post published research last week that showed that the level of THC in many of Colorado’s marijuana edibles is inconsistent and occasionally mislabeled.

“One Dr. J’s milk chocolate Star Barz labeled for 100 milligrams of THC had 0.37 milligrams of the valued psychoactive component, according to three tests onducted by Steep Hill Halent of Colorado, a state-licensed marijuana testing facility. Another popular Dr. J’s chocolate bar, the 100-milligram Winter Mint flavor, tested similarly in two experiments, showing 0.28 milligrams of THC,” wrote the Post’s Ricardo Baca.

We here at BW conducted a similar test and found that the third bite of our marijuana chocolate bar, was like, whoa, man, and that it made Battlestar Galactica seem like a documentary.

We also wrote about the ways that the edibles industry would be monitored and regulated back in December, which you can read here: www.boulderweekly.com/article-12058-boulderand-brownies.html

HE SHOT THE SHERIFF’S DEPUTY, BUT HE SWEARS IT WAS IN SELF- DEFENSE

Courts in Pensacola, Fla., shot down an attempt by 24-year-old Keenan Finkelstein to use the much maligned “Stand Your Ground,” law to have charges against him dismissed.

But there’s a twist. And it’s all in who he stood his ground against: a deputy looking for a robbery suspect, Deputy Sgt. Shendrick Johnson.

Defense attorneys argued that the deputy emerged from the shadows without identifying himself, and that Finkelstein’s gunshot to the deputy’s leg was an act of self-defense. The real laugh riot?

Finkelstein wasn’t even the suspect police were looking for. Just a poor, armed schlub living on the same block.

Trial is set for April, where Finkelstein is expected to continue the self-defense argument.

Will the defense work? Well, we here at BW aren’t fancy big-city lawyers by any means, but online images of Sgt. Johnson receiving a purple heart indicate he is black, so…

NUMBER OF INSURED ON THE RISE

Data released from Gallup this week shows that the level of Americans without health insurance is continuing to decline, and has reached the lowest quarterly level since 2008, a drop that it links to the effects of the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.

The data is based on more than 21,000 interviews, and shows a 1.5 percent drop in the rate of uninsured, a percentage representing approximately 3 million people.

The data also found that enrollment is lagging among Latinos, but that it is booming among people who make less than $36,000 year.

The deadest of deadlines to sign up and avoid paying a financial penalty is by the end of March.

K-A-N-S-A-S

A spelling bee in Jackson County, Kan., last week didn’t just give up when they ran out of words on the list. Contestants went an additional 20 rounds by picking them out of the dictionary, topping off a 75-round marathon contest.

In the end, seventh-grader Kush Sharma, 13, beat out fifth-grader Sophia Hoffman, 11 when she choked on the word “stifling.”
