SEERSUCKER GAMES

Like the Olympics, horse racing is one of those sports that everyone becomes an expert in for two weeks and then immediately forgets about — as if it never existed — the minute a possibility for a Triple Crown winner vanishes.

Lucky for us, we’ve had a few Triple Crown runs in the last few years and though they’ve produced no winner, they have continued to grow the popularity of the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness and The Belmont Stakes. Steeped in history, these three races carry with them time-tested festivities and traditions — from seersucker suits to mint juleps to big fancy hats to frat boys puking up jäger bombs.

The West End Tavern is hosting three Triple Crown parties (to coincide with the running of the three races) that honor only the best of those traditions. The parties, on May 2 (Kentucky Derby), May 16 (Preakness) and June 6 (Belmont), all begin at 11:30 a.m. From there, West End will be pouring mint juleps all day and handing out prizes to “the best dressed ladies and gentlemen.”

You’ll also be able to place bets on the annual crab races — hermit crabs line up and become the target of aggressive, but good-spirited yelling until a winner is crowned. Prizes will be given to those who bet on the right crab.

LOCAL WINE AND COZY TIMES

What We Love Winery in North Boulder is hosting an “Intimate Dinner Series” this spring. The winery will be pairing their wine with cuisine from some of the county’s best chefs, all in the intimate setting of the winery’s taproom.

Sit between barrels of aging wine and chat with owners Michael Hasler and Carolee Corey throughout the night. There will also belive music.

The dinner on Wednesday, May 6 is currently taking reservations. It costs $50 per guest and the event runs from 6-9 p.m. For tickets or more information, call 303-517-2428.

FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL

More than 50 craft breweries and 12 food trucks will organize just north of us at the Loveland Food Share for the Front Range Rally on Saturday, May 30.

The festival celebrating craft beer and food truck cuisine will benefit the Food Bank for Larimer County. Tickets are only $40, so if you’re itching for Boulder County to up its food truck game, head up north for an afternoon and bring back some good stories.

MAKE MILK!

McGuckin Hardware is a Boulder staple. That’s largely because they provide more services than you would expect a hardware store to provide.

It should be no surprise to many, then, that McGuckin is hosting a Make Your Own Coconut Milk event on Saturday, April 25 at 11 a.m. Join “Green Vest Sarah,” who will show you how to harvest milk from coconuts quickly and efficiently. Best of all, admission is free.

DINNER AND CHARITY AUCTION

The Crossroads School in Longmont is holding its annual dinner and charity auction on Friday, April 24 at 6 p.m.

A silent and live auction will take place, and the proceeds will benefit at-risk middle and high school students in Longmont. The food will be prepared by Crossroads culinary arts students with the help of a professional chef.

The auction and dinner takes place at the LifeBridge Christian Church Fellowship Hall in Longmont, and you can RSVP or get more information at www.crossroadslongmont.com.
