New sheriff’s office unveiled

A public grand opening for the new Boulder County Sheriff ’s Office headquarters building will be held at on Monday, Aug.1.

Tours of the new facility, located at 5600 Flatiron Pkwy. in Boulder, will be offered until 7 p.m., following a 1 p.m. dedication ceremony.

The sheriff ’s administrative offices had been located at the county’s Criminal Justice Center, at 1777 6th St. in Boulder, since 1976.

The new building was purchased in 2009 from the Fresh Produce women’s apparel company for about $8 million dollars. The county invested another $5 million to remodel the structure. The building is approximately 76,100 square feet and sits on nearly seven acres of land.

The half-hour dedication ceremony will include remarks by Sheriff Joe Pelle and the introduction of the county commissioners and architect Alan Watkins.

Training offered for candidates

As election season approaches, the Boulder city clerk is hosting three training sessions to help candidates understand the requirements, limitations and documentation involved in the process.

The first of the three election training sessions will be July 28 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Municipal Building lobby. Candidates will learn about the petition process, receive an overview of election guidelines and learn about the initial reporting forms that must be filed.

An Aug. 25 training will focus on election financial reporting for candidates and committee treasurers. A Sept. 15 training will wrap up with a general election review and a Q&A session.

Lafayette library gets Nooks

The Lafayette Public Library has acquired six new Nook e-readers that are available for checkout.

In related news, the Lafayette library’s Homework Center needs afterschool volunteer tutors for the upcoming school year. Volunteers are asked to be

available one afternoon or evening a week for two hours to help a student with homework. Apply online or pick up an application at the library. Interviews are in early August, and a volunteer training is set for Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Visit Walker Ranch July 31

Walker Ranch Homestead is hosting its annual summer open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 31.

Costumed volunteers demonstrate chores and activities of ranch life in the 1800s and play a vintage “base ball” game.

Visitors are invited to participate in several chores, including making wooden shingles, churning butter and doing laundry the old fashioned way.

The baseball game starts at 1 p.m.

Other activities include tours of the homestead, blacksmithing, meal preparation, calf-roping, wood-cutting, spinning/ weaving and “unmentionables” programs, which start at noon.

Dogs and bicycles are not permitted.

Barbershoppers return to Boulder

For the 62nd consecutive year, on Saturday, July 30, at 7 p.m., the Boulder Timberliners Barbershop Chorus will host an evening of barbershop singing at Chautauqua Auditorium.

More than 130 barbershoppers will be on stage for the mass chorus presentations, in addition to performances by individual quartets and choruses, including the Boulder Timberliners, the Longmont Long’s Peak Chorus, The MountainAires and the Colorado Spirit Women’s Chorus.
