Cops Crash Campout
At approximately 5:45 p.m. on April 28, deputies from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office received a call that seniors from Boulder High School were planning to hold a campout in the mountains west of Boulder. Deputies responded to the area of Gordon Gulch, located on Highway 72 between Nederland and Ward, and found roughly 200 students camping in the area. The deputies remained on scene overnight, because of the number of students and inclement weather conditions, to maintain order and provide medical assistance.

Deputies initially patrolled the campground to make sure students were prepared for the snowy conditions forecasted for the area. According to the report, as they made their rounds they encountered students with alcohol and made them pour it out. The rain and snow caused the ground to deteriorate and deputies had to tow vehicles that were blocking the road and access to the campground. Later that evening deputies conducted a foot patrol in the campground and were accompanied by EMTs and paramedics. Three students were transported by ambulance to Boulder Community Hospital because of over consumption of alcohol and other students were transported to the Alcohol Recovery Center.  One student was arrested on charges of Third Degree Assault and released to her parents.

On the morning of April 29 additional deputies were sent to the campground to assist students leaving the area and tow truck was requested to assist with the 40-50 cars that were stuck.

Don’t Tread On Pedestrians
April 27 was not the best day to take a stroll or go on a bike ride, as there were three separate traffic accidents involving bicyclists or pedestrians.
The first accident occurred at approximately 10:05 a.m. on Baseline near 27th Street in a crosswalk. A 19-year-old female riding her bike was hit by a Toyota Matrix while she was in the flashing crosswalk. The 65-year-old male driver of the Matrix was ticketed. The cyclist was taken to the hospital and treated for broken bones.

The second accident took place at Folsom and Canyon, when a bicyclist was hit by a car while headed north on Folsom. Witnesses said the car heading south turned left in front of the cyclist, despite the fact that the cyclist had a green light and the right of way. The cyclist sustained injuries and required stitches.

The third accident occurred at approximately 3:05 p.m. on 28th Street in a crossing just south of Iris Avenue. According to police reports, a hit-and-run accident occurred when a female pedestrian was hit by a car that then kept driving. The victim sustained serious leg injuries and possible internal injuries. The driver was arrested a short while later at 55th and Valmont. The driver is reportedly believed to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

Coal Use Boosts Protestor’s Energy
On Tuesday, April 27 at 12:55 p.m., approximately 15 deputies from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and the Boulder Police Department responded to a report of trespassers at the Xcel power plant, at 1800 63rd St. Roughly 20 people gathered outside the power plant to protest the Xcel plant’s use of coal. Five protesters managed to climb over the fence and onto the property belonging to Xcel. These five protestors were each arrested for one count of Second Degree Trespass, a class three misdemeanor, and were transported to the Boulder County Jail. Members of the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center participated in the rally, but it is unknown if the people arrested were members of the group.

Hiker Rescued at Eldora
Personnel from the Rocky Mountain Fire, Rocky Mountain Rescue and Boulder County Sheriff’s Office were summoned to the Eldorado State Park, in Eldorado Springs, on April 25, at approximately 3:00 p.m. on the report of a fallen hiker. The 70-year-old male was climbing down at the Chocker Stone, when he lost his footing and fell, rolling approximately 30 feet down the hill. Other hikers in the area provided first aid to the injured victim until the paramedics arrived to treat the man.  Rocky Mountain Rescue and Rocky Mountain Fire personnel were able to bring the hiker off the mountain and transported him to the hospital.

Failed Flee
Shortly after 2:00 a.m. on April 25, two deputies from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office observed a vehicle driving recklessly in the area of McCaslin Boulevard and Coalton Road in Superior. The vehicle fled eastbound on Coalton at speeds well above the limit. The deputies caught up to the vehicle near Flatiron Drive and Interlocken Loop in Broomfield County and attempted to perform a traffic stop.  According to reports, the suspect failed to stop and the deputies pursued the vehicle at a safe distance in the westbound lanes until the suspect crashed the vehicle a short distance later. The suspect, a 51-year-old woman, was not injured, but reportedly would not obey the deputies’ commands forcing them to deploy a Police Service dog. The dog seized the suspect on her left arm, but because she was wearing a heavy coat she did not sustain any injuries. The suspect was taken into custody and charged with First Degree Assault, Vehicular Eluding, Resisting Arrest, Obstructing a Peace Officer and other charges.
