Fallen Iraq and Afghanistan veterans to be honored at CU Boulder

The University Memorial Center at the University of Colorado Boulder — Colorado’s official memorial to veterans — will host a Veterans Day ceremony on at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 11 in the UMC’s Glenn Miller Ballroom. The annual ceremony will include a dedication of plaques honoring those who have fallen in Iraq and Afghanistan. The ceremony is open to the public.

The ceremony will feature Maj. David M. Rozelle, commanding officer of the CU-Boulder Army ROTC program, who was the first amputee in modern history to return to the same battlefield where his injury occurred. Other speakers will include Carlos Garcia, UMC director, CU-Boulder student Tiffanie Battram, UMC board chair, and opening speaker Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano. A reception will follow in the UMC Veterans Lounge.

There are several other events happening around campus in observance of Veterans Day. “Remembering Our Fallen” will encourage the campus community from Nov. 7-11 to take a few quiet moments in the UMC Gallery to remember the servicemen and women killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan.

On Nov. 11, a Veterans Day concert will take place at Macky Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature the CU-Boulder Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band, including selections from Copland, Ward and Sousa. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact CU Presents at 303-492-8008.

On Nov. 12 at 10:30 a.m., a pre-game for the CU vs. Arizona football game will take place at the UMC South Terrace, and will be hosted by CU-Boulder student veterans. Local veterans, active duty, National Guard and reserve personnel/families and friends are invited. The party features a live band, food, beverages and door prizes.
