It’s easy to get excited about saving the pandas or the polar bears or the prairie dogs or anything else you could conceivably cuddle with. They’re cute.
It’s a little harder to recognize the importance of saving the bat. But that’s the idea behind the Year of the Bat, which aims to protect the world’s only flying mammal.
Bats are under fire — like just about any other animal in the world — from the destruction of their habitats and their frequent contact with humans, who typically fear them a lot more than they fear squirrels or chipmunks.
