KGNU hosts annual ‘secret show’ fundraiser

For the second year in a row, KGNU Independent Community Radio is hosting a “Secret Show” and is announcing only clues about the identity of the performers who will appear at the Dec. 8 concert.

The mystery musicians will perform at 8 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Lodge, at 1543 Pearl St. in Boulder.

“The concept of the event is a bit unusual,” says Sam Fuqua, KGNU station manager. “We ask people to buy a ticket and take a chance on what we describe as an evening of beautiful music. And last year we were pleasantly surprised when the event sold out in advance.”

KGNU scrambles the true identities of the performers as anagrams and posts them on the station’s website. Last year, headliner Gregory Alan Isakov and supporting act Porlolo went under the names “Yak Gives a Long Roar!” and “Or Pollo?” This year, KGNU has announced the line-up as “Bad Ripper” and “The Holy Otter Clan Rangers.”

“The clues aren’t impossible,” KGNU Music Director John Schaefer says. “Well, The Holy Otter Clan Rangers is really hard. But even if people don’t figure them out, I know they will be pleasantly surprised to hear these bands in such a small and unique space.”

Tickets are available at Doors open at 7 p.m., and limited seating is available.

The volunteer-powered, listener-supported radio station has been broadcasting since 1978 with a mix of news, culture and eclectic music. KGNU can be heard in Denver and Boulder on 88.5 FM, and a large part of the Front Range on 1390 AM.
