Microsoft Surface tablet to ship by the end of October

The Surface, Microsoft’s tablet to answer the iPad that has been hinted at for months, finally has a price and a release date.

Microsoft says the Surface will ship Oct. 26 and can be pre-ordered in the U.S., Canada and six other countries. It’s set at $499, matching the iPad’s price, and will run Windows RT, the Windows 8 system for mobile devices.
