Senate candidate from Indiana: Rape is God’s will

Another Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate has attempted to minimize rape.

Richard Mourdock, the state’s treasurer who defeated Sen. Richard Lugar in a primary race, said during a debate Tuesday that rape was “something God intended to happen” and that therefore pregnancies resulting from rape shouldn’t be terminated with abortions.

Mourdock’s position is that abortion should never be allowed.

His comments resemble those of Rep. Todd Akin of Missouri, also a Republican, whose comment earlier this election season about “legitimate rape” made headlines and prompted many to urge Akin to drop out of the race.

Mourdock has not apologized for the comment.
