The Washington Post has announced it will be the next daily newspaper to implement a paywall on its website, charging “frequent users” a fee to view articles.
The Post announced the change will happen “this summer” and will affect those who view more than 20 articles in a month.
It will allow exceptions for students, government employees, subscribers to the print edition and military personnel.
The Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe and New York Times, among others, have already implemented paywalls. While newspapers aim to collect some revenue from readers online, paywalls are sometimes seen as problematic because they can drive away readers.
